SCUOLA MERLETTI DI GORIZIA
On 8 April 1672, a number of Ursuline nuns arrived in Gorizia, entrusted with taking care of the education of girls from a variety of social classes in the city.
This education was not focused exclusively on monastic life, and also included learning traditionally feminine crafts such as embroidery and lacemaking.
The lacemaking industry began to grow from the 1700s onwards, and Gorizia gained particular renown for the sophisticated techniques used.
Modern Gorizia lace uses non-continuous threads, because the motifs are worked separately and then attached to the background using an extremely fine hook.
Today ERPAC promotes and manages the Lace School, carries out research and study, and activities for the promotion of lace and lacemaking, as well as the collective brand name “Merletto goriziano – SCM – FVG.”
