MUSEO GORTANI MICHELE

The Michele Gortani Carnic Museum of Folk Arts is one of the most important Alpine ethnographic museums in Europe. It is located in the majestic 17th century Palazzo Campeis in Tolmezzo.

The collections in the museum reflect the hallmarks of an area that straddles different parts of Europe and has historically been open to both the Adriatic Sea and Central Europe.

The museum plans, runs and publicizes a wide range of activities in order to promote the area’s cultural heritage and champion the memories and traditions of the community and its roots.

Carnia’s distinctive features and exceptional craftsmanship are showcased in exhibitions that tell the stories of the original handmade footwear known locally as scarpèts, symbolic artisanal items like the gugjet, and the weaving tradition that is the legacy of Jacopo Linussio and the glorious entrepreneurial past represented by Carnia’s 18th century textiles scene.
